Nassrin stared at the screen and typed in the last of her daily report. She didnât think they had gotten very far with Claus. She glanced over at Dea, who was sitting at her computer. She looked so confident with her unwavering gaze, upright posture, and tight-fitting clothes.
âHave I grown horns or something?â Dea asked without looking at Nassrin. âI can feel you staring at me.â
Nassrin was about to answer but was interrupted by Liam, who walked into the office out of breath.
âThe papers are running with it now ⦠damn it!â
âI saw that,â Dea said with a nod. âPeople have started keeping their kids home from school, and thereâs been a frenzy of activity in various Facebook groups. Thereâs no helping that, but we risk the whole thing getting out of control.â
âExcuse me?â
All three of them looked toward the door, where the chief constable stood watching them.
âChief Dybbøl,â Liam said cheerfully, straightening his back.
âI thought youâd probably still be here,â Margrethe Dybbøl said. âI read the online newspapers.â
âYes,â Liam said. âItâs out everywhere now.â
Dybbøl cleared her throat. âDo you have all our people on it?â
âYes, everyone who can be spared from other duties,â Liam said, standing up. âI have a good forty people out in the field right now.â
âAnd what do you have from today? I havenât seen any reports yet.â
âTheyâre almost done,â Liam said. âWe were at the address a few hours after the fifth person disappeared. Weâre gaining on them. We know what our perpetrator is after. The problem is that the contents of the Ten Commandments or the selected verses from the Quran can fit a broad selection of people. Todayâs was about not committing murder. Luckily, there arenât too many murderers, so that narrowed things down, and we were able to quickly narrow in on the people we should probably concentrate on. The man weâre assuming is our latest victim was previously convicted of murder. He was released four years ago. While he was in jail, his wife gave birth to two of their five kids. We spoke to her.â
âDoes that mean that youâve made a breakthrough?â
Liam looked into her eyes. âNo, unfortunately not.â
âThatâs not what I want to hear. I want these disappearances to end. I fully understand that it may be difficult without bodies or crime scenes, but youâve been given free rein to call in all the manpower you need, and I need there to be progress. The people demand it.â
âI know ⦠Dybbøl, jeez,â Liam said, frustrated. âWeâre working our butts off around the clock, and I know the pressureâs on. Besides, thereâs nothing we would rather see than a break in the case. Fear is spreading everywhere, and I myself want these people brought safely back to their families. But what the hell do you want us to do beyond turning over every single stone? Plusââhe had gotten so worked up that a little drop of spit had landed on the chiefâs jacket collarââweâre trying to prevent more people from disappearing by attempting to figure out what the perpetratorâs next move will be.
